Ground Breaking CeremonySummary of Rt. Hon. Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad,Prime Minister of Malaysia speech ( 3 May 1996 ) The ground-breaking ceremony for the WYF's new headquarters at Malacca , Malaysia , reflected the commitment of the WYF's Board of Trustee in erecting a permanent base for operations, one that would serve the focal point for youth activities at national, regional and global levels in the future.

Conducted in an atmosphere of colour and tradition, the ground-breaking ceremony, officiated by the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, was in itself a historic event.

In his speech, Dr. Mahathir stressed that youth leaders had to maintain their idealism and quest for fairness.

"Youth of today should be free to struggle for what is right, just as the youth of yesterday did," he said.

The Prime Minister, who was a delegate of WAY in his younger days, said the youth of today were facing many challenges arising from the rapidly changing world.

The Prime Minister, who gave full support to the idea of a headquarters for WYF in Malaysia , said the Foundation was poised to play a vital role in integrating all resources and facilities available for the betterment of international youth councils.

" I have full confidence that WYF with its visionary leadership and committed staff can help realise the aspiration of the youth to implement their projects, " he said.

Chaired by Datuk Ali, the Foundation's board comprises Dr Kim Jip, President of the AYC, WAY secretary-general Heikki Pakarinen, AYC secretary- general Datuk Fuad Hassan, Shiv Khare, executive director of the Asian Youth Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development. MYC President Suhaimi Ibrahim, WAY Vice-president Rev. N.N Nanyak, Hishamuddin Tun Hussein, Parliamentary to the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Malaysia Abdul Halim Abu Bakar, director-general of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia and corporate leader Shahril Tan Sri Shamsuddin, Managing director of Sapura Holdings.

Datuk Ali said while WAY's role was to voice the views and fears of youth at international forums, WYF's work would centre on leadership training, promotion of peace and solidarity, education and skills training to eradicate poverty.
